Michael Landefeld - pin-up artist

The Michael Landefeld gallery at the The Pin-up Files has just gone live!

Michael Landefeld is best known for his beautiful pin-up girls, whose fusion of retro charm and modern spice make them instantly recognizable and known throughout the art world.

Michael's pin-up girls can be seen on everything from tee shirts to stickers to rolling papers. His girls have even shown up as tattoos and boat art. Most recently, members of the Armed Forces have used Michael's military inspired pin-ups as Unit Combat Patches and even decals on Black Hawk Helicopters.

New Look for The Pin-up Files

As a 10th birthday present we've built a new template for The Pin-up Files main site. We thought this would be even better than lingerie.

It's been launched today but only applied to a few areas and galleries so far. This was done because we are incredibly impatient.

It's going to take a few months of very hard work for the changeover to be completed before the eyes of a watching world and for a while it's going to be a mixture of old, new and a modicum of chaos .. but we love that. Stockings will get laddered along the way but we'll be firing our bullet bras and our aim is true!

This pin-up fell out of the screen and onto the ice rink we keep in the coding vaults so it's not straight forward by any means. Luckily we had warned her in advance that this might happen so she was wearing her skates.

Strange things may happen, but the website LOVES it and has gone very coy!!

The work goes on...

Pinup Reloaded - a stunning genre evolving

A new brand of pinup glamour has been gradually evolving over the past few years and it has us spellbound and entranced.

Its roots are steeped in popular movements and iconography from the 20th century. It is a bewitching brew of 1950s lingerie and props (including cars and bikes), Rockabilly, 1970s Punk, 1980's Goth, with more than a hint of classic Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren pinup styling and composition. I also taste science fiction. It can contain any and all of these elements.

This smoking hot brew is being stirred by photographers such as Viva Van Story who's work often hints at some dark, underlying Gothic tale but is always replete with retro sensuality, and Robert Alvarado with models and pin-up compositions sometimes seeming like the product of some exotic alien paradise.

Both are important exponents and trailblazers of the style.

Its models, Sabina Kelley for example, have already created their own powerful and exotic visual statements and are an integral part of the look. Frequently thrown into the mix are beautiful, luxuriant, and extensive tattoos, and this is almost a signature for the genre. The "inked" girls, and I love that expression.

So what do we call this reloaded pin-up, if it needs a name? Tonight I'm thinking "Punk Pinup" or "Gothic Glamour" but tomorrow is another day...
